Juliet and Tea Biscuits Border Options

Hello quilting friends! We have made sew many beautiful projects from our Dahlia and Tea Dye collections, including Juliet and Tea Biscuits during our quilt along and retreat.

For everyone who has already made one of these quilts or is thinking of making one and want to add a border to your quilt, we have some wonderful border ideas for you!

This is one of the most common questions I get, "How can I make my quilt bigger?" Borders are a great way to enlarge and personalize your quilt.
I'm going to show you a few ways to create fun and different borders to make Juliet and Tea Biscuits design a little bit more special.
For all border options, use basic border directions by sewing to the sides and to the top and bottom of the quilt.
Notice, for every option below, we start with the basic Juliet design shown above without any borders. This pattern and kit is available on our website!



Who doesn't love a fun border?
For this option, I have added a small inner border and wider outer border with a floral print fabric.
-For this border option-
Quilt Center: 62" x 62" (unfinished original quilt without border)
Quilt with Inner Border: 64" x 64" unfinished
Final Quilt Size: 78" x 78"
Inner Border: cut 1½" x WOF strips - (½ yard of fabric)
Outer Border: cut 7½" x WOF strips - (1 yard of 108" or 2 yards of 42" of fabric)

Another fun option for a border would be Half Square Triangle blocks.
Outline your quilt with this zig zag design to add a dramatic element.
To create this border, you will cut:
Inner Border cut 1¾" x WOF strips from light background
Outer Border 68 HST cut from 4⅞" dark background squares
64 HST cut from 4⅞" light background squares
132 HST cut from 4⅞" dark fabric
4 - 4½" squares dark background
4 - 4½" x 8½" rectangle dark background
Sew HST units. Make 68 dark background and 64 light background.
Arrange and sew 64 HST units in dark background and 64 HST in light background as shown above to create 32 border blocks.
Make 4.
Start by sewing your 1¾" inner border to the quilt center. Sew your border blocks and corner blocks to make the outer border then add to the quilt, following basic border directions.

Quilt Center: 62" x 62" (unfinished original quilt without border)
Quilt with Inner Border: 64½" x 64½" unfinished
Final Quilt Size: 80" x 80"
Fabric required for this border option:
• 1½ yards light background
• 1¼ yards dark background
• 1½ yards dark

Another fun option...

You can add stars to each corner to really highlight the beauty of the Juliet design.
-For this border option-
Quilt Center: 62" x 62" (unfinished original quilt without border)
Quilt with Inner Border: 64½" x 64½" unfinished
Final Quilt Size: 80" x 80"
Inner Border cut 1¾" x WOF strips from light background
Zig Zag Border cut 4⅞" HST's (128 background and 128 dark fabric)
Corner Stars Size 8" finished
To create the zig zag effect, combine 4 HSTs into 32 blocks (8" finished). For the corners, create 4 eight-point stars (8" finished). You can use our Eight Point Star Template and watch our video for tips on how to make a star block!
Fabric required for this border option:
• 1½ yards background
• 1½ yards dark
• 2 Fat Quarters for the corner stars
Square in a Square option...

Another fun option for a border would be Square in a Square blocks.
To create this border, you will cut:
Inner Border: cut 1¾" x WOF strips from light background
36 Squares - 6⅛" cut from variety of dark fabric
68 HST's cut from 4⅞" light background squares
72 HST's cut from 4⅞" dark background squares
Arrange 2 light background, 2 dark background HSTs and 1 dark square.
Combine HSTs with center square as shown.
Make 32 border blocks and 4 corner border blocks as shown above.
Arrange and sew 32 border blocks and 4 corner blocks to outline your quilt with rainbow squares to add a rainbow ring around the quilt.

Quilt Center: 62" x 62" (unfinished original quilt without border)
Quilt with Inner Border: 64½" x 64½" unfinished
Final Quilt Size: 80" x 80"
Fabric required for this border option:
• 1½ yards light background
• 1¼ yards dark background
• 1 Fat Eighth Bundle from Tea Dye

SEW many of the girls at retreat worked on Tea Biscuits. This is a beautiful quilt and with so many pieced blocks, a simple border is the perfect addition.

I'd love to share three of my favorite border options for this quilt.



For the Tea Biscuits quilt, I have added an inner and outer border to frame the design and make the quilt bigger.
-For this option-
Quilt Center: 62½" X 68" (original quilt without border)
Final Quilt Size: 76½" x 82"
Inner Border: cut 1½" x WOF strips - (½ yard of fabric)
Outer Border: cut 6½" x WOF strips - (3/4 yard of 108" wide or 1½ yard of 42" wide fabric)
