Week 4 of our Mystery Quilt project brings an exciting challenge: we're crafting a creative take on the classic nine patch block. For Week 4, you will need:

Tips for success: 
- Double-check your measurements before you cut - accuracy is key!
- Chain piece your squares to save time and ensure consistency.
- Press seams as you go to make assembly easier and your finished block flatter.

Mystery 2025 Block 4 - Poppy Seeds

Block 4
6½" x 6½" unfinished
Make 8.

Cutting Directions:

Select one light fabric and one dark fabric.
Light Fabric: 32 – 2” light squares B
16 – 2" x 5" light rectangles C
Dark Fabric: 48 – 2” dark squares A
NOTE: You can also use more light and dark fabrics if you want to get a bit more scrappy.

Block 4 Step 1

Join 5 A - 2" dark squares and 4 B - 2" light squares into rows as shown.

Block 4 Step 2

Sew rows together.

Block 4 Step 3

Make 8 nine patches.

Block 4 Step 4

Add 1 A - 2" dark square and 2 C - 2" x 5" light rectangles.

Block 4 Step 5

Press in direction of arrows. Make 8 blocks.

Four Block 4s will be positioned in each corner (between our Block 3 sides as shown) of the quilt center on our Mystery Quilt 2025 grid. The remaining four Block 4s will be near the outer Block 1s as shown. Please take note of their rotations.

Edyta’s Tip:
Don't be afraid to experiment with fabric placement! Shifting the fabrics or opting for scrappier pieces can yield a different look. Consider using high-contrasting fabrics for a bold look, or go for subtle shifts for a more blended effect. Once your block is finished, press it well to set seams and keep your lines crisp.
