Mystery Quilt 2025 - Week 4

Week 4 of our Mystery Quilt project brings an exciting challenge: we're crafting a creative take on the classic nine patch block. Whether you're a seasoned quilter or just getting started, this block offers the perfect balance of tradition and opportunity for personal flair! Let's dive into our fabrics and learn to build your block with confidence!

I am SEW proud of everyone’s progress so far! It’s truly inspiring to watch each of you learn new techniques and build your skills as we quilt together on this mystery journey. No matter which fabrics you’ve picked out, you can be confident that this mystery quilt will turn out absolutely beautiful! Every combination adds its own unique twist, ensuring your finished quilt is truly one-of-a-kind. For Week 4, you will need:

(These notions are just my recommendations)

• Fabrics
• Creative Grids® Quilt Ruler 6½" x 6½"
• Crisp Fabric Spray   
  (Edyta’s Tip: I like to press all my fabric ahead of cutting. I use Crisp for a nice finish!)
• Aurifil Thread – 2310 recommended  
• Sew Daisy Fabric Markers (Use fabric markers to stay organized)
• Olfa Spinning Mat 
• Olfa Rotary and Blades 
  (Edyta’s Tip: Always have a stash of fresh blades for your rotary and remember to change yours)
• Pins, Scissors, Needle Threader, and Double Needle Threader
• Microtex Needles 70/10   

Once you have everything ready, it is time to begin!

Tips for success: 
- Double-check your measurements before you cut - accuracy is key!
- Chain piece your squares to save time and ensure consistency.
- Press seams as you go to make assembly easier and your finished block flatter.

Block 4
6½" x 6½" unfinished
Make 8.

Cutting Directions:

Select one light fabric and one dark fabric.
Light Fabric: 32 – 2” light squares B
16 – 2" x 5" light rectangles C
Dark Fabric: 48 – 2” dark squares A
NOTE: You can also use more light and dark fabrics if you want to get a bit more scrappy.

Block Assembly

Join 5 A - 2" dark squares and 4 B - 2" light squares into rows as shown.

Sew rows together.

Make 8 nine patches.

Add 1 A - 2" dark square and 2 C - 2" x 5" light rectangles.

Press in direction of arrows. Make 8 blocks.

Building a quilt using a nine-patch block is a fun and straightforward project that’s perfect for beginners and seasoned quilters alike! Four Block 4s will be positioned in each corner (between our Block 3 sides as shown) of the quilt center on our Mystery Quilt 2025 grid. The remaining four Block 4s will be near the outer Block 1s as shown. Please take note of their rotations.

Edyta’s Tip:
Don't be afraid to experiment with fabric placement! Shifting the fabrics or opting for scrappier pieces can yield a different look. Consider using high-contrasting fabrics for a bold look, or go for subtle shifts for a more blended effect. Once your block is finished, press it well to set seams and keep your lines crisp.
