Mystery Quilt 2025 - Week 9

Welcome to week 9 of the Mystery Quilt 2025 adventure! This final installment focuses on creating the last blocks that bring our quilt border to life. It’s incredible to think about how much we’ve learned and accomplished together on this journey from start to finish.

Thank you all for your enthusiasm, creativity, and willingness to try new techniques. Your dedication has helped transform each clue into part of a beautiful quilt, and I can't wait to see how your finished projects turn out. The sense of community throughout this mystery quilting experience has truly been inspiring.

Flower

Don’t worry if you aren’t using the Poppy Seeds collection—you can absolutely use your own fabric scraps! My goal is to inspire you every week, no matter what materials you choose. If you are running out of certain fabrics, please know that you can use multiple pieces for the blocks in your last border. The scrappier, the more beautiful it will look!
Take a look at the additional images of this week’s blocks below, featuring a variety of fabric collections, to spark your creativity.

Laundry Basket Quilts

For our last blocks, we focused on precision cutting, piecing, and color placement, ensuring a seamless frame for the quilt's design. By now, your skills have grown, and you can confidently tackle even the trickiest seams or alignments with ease.

Block 9A and 9B
6½" x 6½" unfinished
Make 28 Block 9A and 28 Block 9B.

Cutting Directions:

We are getting to the end, and this border requires a little more fabric than a half yard.
It is the perfect time to get creative and use all your leftover pieces.
If you do not have enough of one fabric to cut the pieces for your last border blocks, it is okay to make the units from a variety of fabrics. Your quilt design will look fantastic!

Select one light fabric and two dark fabrics.
Light Fabric: 56 light QSTs cut from 14 – 7¼" squares A

Dark Fabrics (2 fabrics):
56 dark QSTs cut from 14 – 7¼" squares B - 1 dark fabric
56 dark HSTs cut from 28 – 6⅞" squares C - 1 dark fabric
NOTE: You can also use more light and dark fabrics if you want to get a bit more scrappy.

Just like I promised (and you know I never break a quilting promise!), I’m thrilled to reveal not only the mysterious blocks I’ve been secretly stitching away at, but also a few of my all-time favorite block designs. If you’re looking to jazz up your borders and make your next project the envy of your quilt group, you’re in the right place!
Take a look at this example using our Log Cabin pattern and a Log Cabin - Sewing Bird Pre-Cut Fabric Kit a —classic, versatile, and almost as comforting as a hot cup of tea on a chilly day.

If you love this quilt and Log Cabin blocks, do not forget that we have a
Log Cabin Virtual Class on December 6th that we would love for you to join!

Edyta’s Tip:
Incorporating a mix of contrasting and complementary colors and prints to create a visually striking quilt blocks. By pairing bold, high-contrast hues with patterns that work well together, you can add depth and interest to your quilt blocks. This approach not only helps each block stand out but also ensures your entire quilt looks cohesive and beautifully coordinated. Experiment with different color combinations and fabric prints to find the perfect balance that brings all your quilt blocks together in a unified, eye-catching design.

Finishing a Quilt

Now is going to be time to finish your quilt by layering with batting and backing.

For my batting I will recommend Hobbs Batting just click on the link and it will take you to one of my favorites! This batting will give your quilt that perfect loft. Cozy and Soft!

You can go the easy way and choose from one of our 108" wide backings that we have available. They are so beautiful and so easy to use.

If you are like me and love to use up all the leftover scraps from your quilt top, you may love to try one of my favorites, scrappy backings! I love making a bar design for the back of my quilt, just like the one below.

Our Quilt top is 90½" x 90½".
I like to make my backing at least 2 inches bigger all the way around.

I love creating a bar design for the backing of my quilts! I start by making 10½" x 94½" wide panels using all the scraps and strips, left over from my quilt top. Nothing goes to waste! Then, I add 10½" x 94½" strips between each of those pieced bars for a beautiful, balanced look. My side strips are a bit larger—at least 2 inches wider 12½" x 94½" strips—to allow extra fabric for setting the quilt on a long-arm quilting frame. Once all my pieces are ready, I simply sew them together, and just like that, I have a unique and creative bar-style quilt backing ready to go!

I think our Quiltessential Fabrics look perfect for my backing!

I wish I could get you flowers to celebrate your beautiful mystery quilt, but the next best thing to live flowers, are appliqued flowers! I have one more surprise for you! If you would like to add a flower border to your quilt, we have Dahlia Silhouettes that are perfect to do that! Look how beautiful this quilt looks!

As we close this chapter, I’m grateful for every message, question, and photo you’ve shared. These final border blocks not only finish our design—they showcase your growth as a quilter. Thank you for quilting along with me, and let’s keep inspiring each other in future projects!

I can't wait to see your Tennessee quilts!

Happy Quilting!
Edyta
