Mystery Quilt 2026 - Month 8
America's landscapes are a huge part of a quilt's charm. The vast and wild wilderness serves as a constant source of inspiration, which clearly shines through in quilt designs and block names. This month, we're inspired by the Bear Paw block. Often symbolizing strength, guidance, and the ability to navigate challenging terrain, these qualities deeply resonate with American history. As the name implies, the Bear Paw block pattern visually resembles four bear paws, each pointing in a different direction. Let's leave our own unique tracks with this inspiring block!
The Strength of the Bear Paw Block
The Bear's Paw block consists of half-square triangles, squares and rectangle strips. These various pieces allow for a wide range of versatility when making this block. As quilt blocks go, it’s an advanced beginner/intermediate block. While the construction itself isn't too complicated, the need for precision is important for the half-square triangles. This block's design is also great for using scraps from your fabric stash if you want to achieve a scrappier look.
History
While the exact origins of the "Bear Paw" block are a bit of a mystery, many believe it started as a sawtooth border in early American quilts. The earliest documented "Bear Paw" quilt actually surfaced in Ohio around 1823. Interestingly, at roughly the same time, this very same block was appearing on Long Island under a different name: "Ducks Foot in the Mud." Over time, it's also been known by several other charming names, including "Hand of Friendship," "Forest Path," "Indian Trail," "Irish Puzzle," "North Wind," and "Rambling Road." However, it's most famously recognized today as the "Bear Paw."

Now let's get all of our supplies ready for Month 8!
(These notions are just my recommendations)
For our Mystery Quilt - Month 8, you will need:
- Fabrics
- Creative Grids® Quilt Ruler 6½" x 6½" or Creative Grids® Quilt Ruler 4½" x 12½"

(Edyta’s Tip: I like to press all my fabric ahead of cutting. I use Crisp for a nice finish!)
- Aurifil Thread – 2310, 2326, or 2312 recommended
- Sew Daisy Fabric Markers (Use fabric markers to stay organized)
- Olfa Folding Mat
- Olfa Rotary and Blades
(Edyta’s Tip: Always have a stash of fresh blades for your rotary and remember to change your rotary blade) - Pins, Scissors, Needle Threader
- Microtex Needles 70/10
Once you have all your materials ready, it’s time to start this month’s mystery quilt block!
Block 8
7¼" x 7¼" unfinished
Make 4.
Cutting Directions:
Select a variety of lights, reds/pinks, and blues for a scrappy look. I chose only one blue for my quilt and varied the rest.
Light Fabric:
16 light 1½" squares
64 light half-square triangles (HST) cut from 32 - 1⅞" squares
16 light 1¼" x 3½" rectangles
Red/Pink Fabric:
64 red/pink half-square triangles (HST) cut from 32 - 1⅞" squares
4 red/pink 1¼" center squares
Blue Fabric:
16 blue 2½" squares
NOTE: I will be pressing seam allowances open in this block.
Block Assembly
To make one HST unit, arrange and sew one light 1⅞" HST and one red 1⅞" HST. Press seams.
Make 64 HST units.
Arrange 2 HST units with red on the bottom right position and sew. Repeat with red on the bottom left of the units. Press seams.
Continue to make 32 of each pairing.
Arrange one of each HST pair, one light 1½" square, and one blue 2½" square into rows as shown.
Sew rows and press.
Sew rows together and press to create the block's corner unit. Make16 corner units.
To create your block, arrange and sew 4 corner units. 4 light 1¼" x 3½" rectangles, and one center 1¼" square into three rows as shown.
Sew rows together.
Press seams. Make 4 blocks.
Unfinished block is 7¼" x 7¼".
Place the new blocks in each corner with the Log Cabin block rows as shown.
Sew into rows then sew rows together and press.
Unfinished size is 55¼" x 55¼".
