Mystery Quilt 2026 - Month 9
Mystery Quilts offer endless possibilities for color and personal expression. A palette of red, white, and blue creates a distinctly patriotic design, while other color combinations can reflect the maker’s individual style through contrasts of light and dark. This freedom of choice continues a long American quilt-making tradition in which practical craft, artistic expression, community, and personal history are stitched together - making quilts an enduring part of the nation’s cultural heritage.
As America grew and developed, so did American patchwork styles and creations. I hope you are still as excited as I am to grow and learn as we keep exploring new boundaries! So far, we have been setting our pieced blocks straight with our growing Mystery Quilt, but this month, we are going to try something new! Lets turn things up by creating "on-point" elements to add to our design.
The Power of "On Point" Block Design
A fun way to give your mystery quilt design a new sense of movement is to set the blocks “on point.” In an on-point layout, square blocks are rotated 45 degrees so that they appear as diamonds, resting on their corners rather than in straight horizontal or vertical rows. Setting triangles and corner triangles are then added to fill the spaces created along the edges of the layout.
Turning blocks on point also increases their overall horizontal span, which means fewer blocks may be needed to cover the same distance. Side setting triangles are typically made from quarter-square triangles so the bias edges lie against the blocks rather than along the outer edge of the quilt. Corner setting triangles are made from half-square triangles for the same reason. Keeping the straight grain along the outer edges helps prevent stretching and distortion, allowing the quilt borders to maintain a consistent size and shape.
History
In the early nineteenth century, American quiltmakers increasingly experimented with pieced block quilts, moving away from earlier formats that often relied on scraps or multiple borders. The growing popularity of block-based designs appears to have paralleled broader changes in the textile industry. These quilts were typically composed of repeated rows of square blocks, often alternating pieced units (generally made up of smaller squares, triangles, or both) with unpieced solid blocks. The blocks could be arranged in straight horizontal rows or set diagonally “on point.” Over time, this repetitive, grid-like arrangement of related blocks became the predominant format for American-made quilts.
With the industrial manufacturing processes transforming everyday life, the American textile industry began to expand rapidly. By the mid-1830s, textile factories employed thousands of women and produced fabrics in an increasingly wide range of colors and patterns. Cotton print fabric, once costly, became inexpensive and widely available, providing American quiltmakers with an abundant source of material for patchwork. This greater access to fabric allowed quiltmakers to devote more attention to color, geometry, and the dynamic relationship between the two. At the same time, expanding educational opportunities for women strengthened their knowledge of mathematics, contributing to the development and growing sophistication of geometric block-style quilt designs.

Now let's get all of our supplies ready for Month 9!

For our Mystery Quilt - Month 9, you will need:
- Fabrics
- Creative Grids® Quilt Ruler 6½" x 6½" or Creative Grids® Quilt Ruler 4½" x 12½"

- Aurifil Thread – 2310, 2326, or 2312 recommended
- Sew Daisy Fabric Markers (Use fabric markers to stay organized)
- Olfa Folding Mat
- Olfa Rotary and Blades
(Edyta’s Tip: Always have a stash of fresh blades for your rotary and remember to change your rotary blade) - Pins, Scissors, Needle Threader
- Microtex Needles 70/10
Once you have all your materials ready, it’s time to start this month’s mystery quilt block!
Border Block 9
2½" x 54½" unfinished
Make 4.
Cutting Directions:
Select a variety of lights and pinks for a scrappy look.
Light Fabric:
208 light quarter-square triangles (QST) cut from 52 - 3¼" squares
16 light half-square triangles (HST) cut from 8 - 1⅞" squares
4 light 2½" squares
Pink Fabric:
108 pink 1⅞" squares
NOTE: I will be pressing all seam allowances open in this block.
Block Assembly
To create a Block 9 Row, arrange and sew 27 pink 1⅞" squares, 52 light 3¼" QSTs, and 4 light end 1⅞" HSTs into a row as shown.
Tip: Please use a scant 1/4" seam allowance and make one border first to ensure a 54½" length, with this many seams your border length may vary based off your seam allowance. It is good practice to lay out the entire border block row before sewing.
Press seams. Make 4 Border Blocks 9.
Each unfinished block row is 2½" x 54½".
Place one border row on each side of the quilt center with 2½" light square in each corner as shown above.
Sew border rows to sides of quilt center and squares to top and bottom border row to make rows as shown above and press seams open.
Unfinished quilt top size is now 58½" x 58½".
