Birthday Quilt 2024 - Block 33

Updated: Aug 16

Let's make each day better than the last.

We are having SEW much fun with this Birthday Mystery Block Quilt Along! I will keep on posting here on our blog every week with at least 1 new 6" finished quilt block design.

I am sew thankful to all of you that want to join me on this Birthday Quilt Along.

You can start making this quilt with the recommended bundles below or using scraps from your stash. A Fat Quarter Bundle and Fat Eighth Bundle are great starting points.

This would be a perfect time to pull fabrics from your stash and mix and match with our bundles to make this quilt your very own. Another great option, is your beautiful fabrics from our Laundry Basket Quilts Fabric Club stash!

I will be making my blocks using a Cocoa Blue Fat Quarter Bundle and the Birthday Bundle 2024 to create this Birthday quilt! There may be some sprinkles of a few favorites from my blue collections.

This project is available for anyone to join in! It will be 55 blocks in 52 weeks. Every Tuesday we will be making a new block(s), so don't forget to Sign Up for our Newsletters and visit our blog each week to quilt along!

At the end of the year I will be providing a variety of layouts for your beautiful 6" blocks.

Let's get started with our next block!

Birthday Block 33

This block will be made using the English Paper Piecing technique.

Watch our Video on YouTube for basic English Paper Piecing directions.

Block Cutting:

Here are your Paper Shapes PDF

*if you printed the PDF before 8/16/24, please refresh your browser page and reprint your PDFs.  There was an accidental error in the scale of the original PDF.

Start by cutting your shapes out from your printed PDF page. Place your shapes on fabric and cut. Remember to cut them 1/4" larger so you can wrap the paper edge with fabric.

You will need to prepare:

8-medium Template B

1-dark Template A

8-dark Template B

8-medium Template D

8-light Template C

4-light squares Template E

4-light triangles Template F

Once all your shapes are ready, start with dark center template A.

Combine template A with 8 medium triangles B as shown. Using Aurifil Thread, needle, and simple whip stitch, sew pieces together.

Next, arrange 8 light templates C. Sew together.

Prepare piece D and dark piece B by sewing them together.

Once completed, sew into the center unit.

Arrange 4 light corner squares E and 4 light triangles F around the center star unit.

Using English Paper Piecing technique, sew all together.

If you begin with a 5/8” octagon this will complete a 6” finished block. Cut the outside pieces a little larger so you can size it perfectly.

Dear Edyta,

I love the shape of this block.

And I ended up with a 7.5 inch block.

The problem is that the templates are exactly making a 6.5 inch block. And By adding the fabric around the paper pieces, you will end up larger.

I drafted the pattern for paper piecing and it came out a perfect 6” finished. It is now a 64 piece block. I used add an 1/8th rather than add a 1/4th.

How about dividing it in to 8 parts and using paper piecing as a technique

I am experienced with EPP and spent at least 15 hours on this block. Please offer an alternative that will end up 6” finished.
